Unveiling the Truth: Over 243,000 Pages of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Assassination Files Released to the Public

In a significant development, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has authorized the release of previously classified files related to Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, comprising over 243,000 pages of documents across more than 6,300 PDF files and one audio recording.

The extensive collection, which had remained under court seal since 1977 when the FBI initially compiled and transferred the records to the National Archives, has now been made publicly accessible through archives.gov/mlk.

This release follows closely on the heels of Gabbard’s recent report calling for criminal charges against several Obama administration officials regarding alleged misconduct during the 2016 election. The declassification effort was executed in partnership with multiple federal agencies, including the DOJ, FBI, CIA, and National Archives.

The newly available documents contain detailed information about the FBI’s assassination investigation, including internal memoranda, investigation progress reports, and accounts from James Earl Ray’s former prison cellmate regarding discussions of potential
assassination plots. The files also encompass intelligence records from Canadian sources and CIA documentation relating to Ray’s international movements.

Dr. Alveda King, MLK Jr.’s niece, expressed gratitude toward President Trump and DNI Gabbard for fulfilling their commitment to transparency. She reflected on her uncle’s dedication to truth and justice, noting that while his loss continues to affect the family, the release of these documents marks an important step toward historical clarity.

“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard stated in her announcement. She credited President Trump’s leadership in pushing for complete transparency regarding this pivotal moment in American history and acknowledged the King family’s supportive stance on the release.

The declassification comes as part of a broader initiative under President Trump’s executive order earlier this year, which mandated the release of records pertaining to three major assassinations: President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The documents were released through the National Archives and Records Administration, providing unprecedented access to materials that have remained classified for nearly half a century. The release encompasses internal FBI communications, investigative leads, and various intelligence reports gathered during the investigation of King’s assassination.

According to DNI Gabbard’s office, the release demonstrates the administration’s commitment to transparency and historical truth. The comprehensive collection includes details about the investigation’s progression, potential leads that were pursued, and information about conversations involving James Earl Ray during his imprisonment.

Social media analysts and researchers have already begun examining the extensive documentation, which promises to provide new insights into one of the most significant events in American civil rights history. The release represents one of the largest declassifications of documents related to the civil rights era and its aftermath.

This unprecedented access to historical documents marks a significant shift in government transparency regarding high-profile political assassinations. The release aligns with previous commitments made by the administration to declassify records related to other notable historical events and figures, fulfilling promises of greater openness about crucial moments in American history.

The documents are now available for public review and analysis, offering researchers, historians, and the general public an
opportunity to examine the federal government’s investigation into MLK Jr.’s assassination in unprecedented detail.
