U.S. Expands Covert Support for Ukraine’s Drone Strikes to Undermine Russian Economy

Recent reporting from the Financial Times has revealed that American intelligence agencies have been actively supporting Ukraine’s campaign of drone strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, with the goal of undermining Moscow’s economic stability and bringing them to negotiations.

According to multiple officials from both Ukraine and the United States familiar with the operations, Washington has been providing crucial intelligence that enables Kiev to conduct long-range attacks on Russian energy facilities well behind the front lines. The intelligence sharing program notably expanded following a July conversation between Presidents Trump and Zelensky.

During this pivotal phone call, Trump reportedly inquired about Ukraine’s capability to strike Moscow if provided with extended-range weaponry. While the White House later clarified that Trump was “merely asking a question, not encouraging further killing,” sources briefed on the call indicated that Trump expressed support for making Russia “feel the pain” to compel negotiations.

Following this exchange, Ukraine demonstrated its existing
capabilities through an increased frequency of drone attacks on Russian energy installations throughout August and September. The United States has invested billions in enhancing Ukraine’s drone program, with reported CIA involvement in the initiative. These attacks have become almost nightly occurrences, with Russian air defenses often struggling to intercept the small drones, particularly when deployed in swarms.

The collaboration involves detailed coordination, with a U.S. official confirming that while Ukraine selects specific targets for long-range strikes, American intelligence provides critical information about vulnerabilities at these sites. Some sources involved in the operations have indicated that the U.S. has also played a role in establishing target priorities for Ukrainian forces.

This marks a shift from the Biden administration’s approach, which had been more hesitant to support such strikes, although it did authorize the provision of ATACMS missiles capable of reaching targets up to approximately 190 miles away near Russian borders.

The possibility of further escalation remains open, with Trump responding “We’ll see… I may” when questioned about potentially providing Tomahawk missiles to Kiev during an Air Force One press briefing. He acknowledged that such a move would represent “a new step of aggression” in the ongoing conflict.

The strikes have proven effective in many instances, with Russian defense systems frequently failing to prevent all attacks,
particularly when faced with multiple drones simultaneously. The campaign represents a strategic effort to pressure Moscow by targeting its economic infrastructure, specifically focusing on energy facilities that are crucial to Russia’s economy.

This intelligence-sharing arrangement demonstrates a significant escalation in U.S. involvement in the conflict, with Washington taking a more active role in enabling Ukraine’s long-range strike
capabilities. The program represents a coordinated effort to weaken Russia’s economic position while avoiding direct military
confrontation between NATO and Russian forces.

The revelation of this intelligence support program provides new insight into the extent of American involvement in Ukraine’s military operations and the strategic approach being employed to influence the course of the conflict. The focus on energy infrastructure targets suggests a deliberate strategy to affect Russia’s economic capacity while minimizing civilian casualties.
