Screven County Pioneers Election Security with Blockchain Technology: A New Era for Democracy

In a groundbreaking development for election security, Screven County, Georgia has become the first U.S. county to implement blockchain technology for securing election results. The historic implementation, which occurred during the November 2024 election cycle, saw the county’s results permanently recorded in Bitcoin block 869,047 through an innovative hash-only timestamping system.

The achievement was highlighted during the Bitcoin 2025 Conference at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, where Simple Proof CEO Carlos Toriello and Screven County Elections Supervisor Stacey Scott shared their experiences with the revolutionary approach to election security.

The technology, developed by Simple Proof, utilizes Bitcoin’s OpenTimestamps protocol to create tamper-proof records while maintaining data privacy. This solution generates cryptographic hashes locally, ensuring sensitive information remains protected while establishing an immutable timestamp on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Scott emphasized the simplicity of implementation, noting that the process required no specialized knowledge of blockchain technology. “We simply needed to email our election results to Simple Proof, who then secured them on the blockchain,” she explained during a video interview at the conference.

The success in Screven County follows Simple Proof’s earlier achievement in Guatemala, where the company secured the 2023 presidential election results. Simple Proof’s technology has gained additional recognition through its selection for the inaugural class of the Strategy Bitcoin Hub at Strategy HQ.
