From Navy SEAL to Child Advocate: Craig Sawyer’s Mission to Combat Domestic Child Trafficking

A decorated former Navy SEAL has transformed his mission from fighting global terrorism to combating domestic child sex trafficking through his nonprofit organization Veterans for Child Rescue. Craig Sawyer, who began his military career as a Marine at 19, later achieved elite status in counterterrorism special operations before transitioning to civilian life.

After serving in the military, Sawyer spent a decade providing high-threat security services in conflict zones for various government entities, including the Department of State and intelligence agencies. His pivot to documentary filmmaking began with a project about rhino conservation, where he discovered the power of visual media to expose wrongdoing and mobilize public support.

In 2015, Sawyer learned from an intelligence community contact that Houston had become a major hub for child sex trafficking. The revelation that domestic child trafficking generated more revenue than all professional sports combined drove him to create “Contraland,” a documentary released in 2019, after facing resistance from major tech companies and the film industry.

The documentary features actual footage from trafficking
investigations, including an operation in Guilford, Connecticut, where a single decoy advertisement for a 12-year-old girl attracted 5,000 predator responses. The sting operations led to multiple arrests, including a Mormon church elder, a cartel member, and other
traffickers.

Sawyer warns parents about predators using technology to target children through gaming platforms, smartphones, and chat applications. These criminals often capture covert images and videos to blackmail victims, sometimes leading to tragic outcomes when young victims cannot cope with the psychological trauma.

The organization’s operations have resulted in 29 arrests with a 100% conviction rate, and 87 additional warrants are pending. Their work involves collaboration with up to nine different agencies in joint operations.

The mission became deeply personal for Sawyer when his 18-year-old daughter Aspen was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in 2018. Rather than remaining a victim, she chose to fight back by becoming a junior decoy agent, helping to catch predators through online operations. She describes confronting arrested perpetrators as a way to reclaim her power and facilitate healing.

Sawyer’s investigations have revealed that criminal networks, including former gun and drug traffickers, are now trafficking children across borders and selling them from various locations like motels, abandoned properties, and through cartel operations.

His organization employs multiple strategies to raise awareness, including producing documentaries, social media campaigns, billboard advertising, NASCAR promotions, and public speaking engagements. Despite facing censorship, they persist in their efforts to educate the public about the prevalence of child trafficking.

The former SEAL advocates for stronger law enforcement measures, legislative reforms, and the removal of corrupt officials. He emphasizes the importance of revamping educational systems to teach children protective strategies against predators. Through his work, Sawyer aims to make child trafficking culturally unacceptable and empower the public with knowledge to combat this criminal enterprise.

As his organization continues to expand its reach and impact, Sawyer remains committed to exposing these criminal networks and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation. The combination of his military expertise, law enforcement experience, and personal motivation drives his mission to dismantle trafficking operations and bring perpetrators to justice.
